Why South Park, Darlington Feels Like a 90s Time Capsule

Alright, let’s take a trip down memory lane, back to the 90s.

Picture it. Shell suits (and let’s be honest, those were seriously cool), round sunglasses and a Bally Sagoo cassette blaring from the Walkman. Or Shabba Ranks if that’s more your thing. Anyone who was around back then knows exactly what I’m talking about. We didn’t care about the weather, we just wanted to look fresh in that bright neon nylon glory!

So, this brings me to today’s adventure. A little gem I stumbled across called “South Park”. Don’t get too excited. I didn’t just discover a tv cartoon. Nope, this is a park. And not just any park, but one that oozes a 90s that made me feel like I was back in the day. Seriously, I’ve never been in a place that instantly transported me to a time when life was simpler, music was better, and everyone was wearing bright tracksuits just for the heck of it. Possibly with those neon wraparound sunglasses too.

Now, I can’t quite put my finger on exactly where this park is located. It’s somewhere around Darlington. I know it wasn’t far from the A167. There was parking with no lines on the side of the road which led me to it. I guess you can Google it.

The place was quiet that day, proper autumn quiet. The rose bushes had shed most of their petals and the lawns were more straw than green, but it suited the place. Pale buildings, a pond with a couple of bridges, everything muted in that late-year way. Not abandoned, just… settled. Calm as if it’s ready for bedtime. The kind of spot where you could sit for a while without needing much.

It made me think a picnic basket would’ve been a good call. I could easily see myself spending an afternoon here with a picnic. Just hilling and enjoying the crisp autumn air. There’s something nostalgic about it too, like the parks you’d see in ’90s shows, where people actually sat on benches and talked instead of scrolling through their phones. Obviously because phones that scroll weren’t invented then.

I really like this place.

Sure it’s guarded by an old light where Spiders 🕷️ have decided to set up home and show Marketing folk how funnels really work but once you’ve got past that the rest of its a lovely place to be. It is just 90s and it’s in Darlington.

By the way.
