Barnard Castle, Not Bad for a Monday Eh 😉

Yes, I am smug today. I will admit it.

An early collection from Birmingham to Manchester. A classic run, clear roads. As soon as I dropped off, I picked up another job heading to Ipswich. The day was shaping up perfectly. Then, sadly, it was cancelled. Back to square one.

The Crash That Changed the Plan
Someone had an accident just off the M60/M67 roundabout. It caused some very impressive delays. The kind where the traffic app turns the roads into solid red lines of regret. What should have taken half an hour now looked like it would take significantly longer. I had one option only: head north, or head east. Anything to get away from the static snarl-up. So, I pointed the van north.

Targets Hit, Detour Taken
I hit my daily targets quicker than expected with a couple of local runs. With time in the bank, I could afford to be choosy. I took a job that was not just a destination, but a route. It took me over the A685.

Let me tell you, that road is amazing. Amazing, amazing, amazing! All rolling hills and open skies, the kind of driving that reminds you why you got a licence in the first place. It curved its way right into Barnard Castle.

Mesmerised by a Castle (And an Entire Day)
I, erm… then spent the rest of the day there. I finally left for home once it got dark. I blame the castle entirely. When the afternoon sun hit the old stone, I was properly mesmerised. I just mooched. Had a pasty. Watched the river. Did nothing that involved an engine or a satnav. It was glorious.

I must say, for a Monday, it has been a brilliant day. I need to find the person who crashed and thank them. If it was not for them clogging up the M60, I would still be driving around a city somewhere, ticking off postcodes. Instead, I found a stunning road and lost an afternoon to a castle in the sunshine.

Sometimes the best jobs are the ones that do not go to plan. They are the ones that give you the A685 and a few hours of quiet in a market town. That is a win.
