Driver Jatt
I’ve spent some time visiting various tractor dealerships around my adopted homeland (Wales).
There’s an entire ecosystem in the farmland world. Something us city folk just aren’t privy to. Yet it’s only an hour or so from the midlands.
There’s a very 90’s vibe about these places. The sort of place where you’re expected to have a semblance of knowledge about the item before approaching the counter. Lots of tractor and farming accessories. Think B&Q hardware isle but on steroids. That kinda sums it up.
At one of the larger dealerships. There was an older gentleman. In #Hereford I think. He must have been at least a couple of centuries old. His wrinkles outlined his smile. A welcoming one at that. He was one of the men who worked at the tractor dealership.
His first question to me.
“You’re a courier, can you read a map?”.
This was the start of our very long conversation about maps, the environment, motorbikes (he rides a manual Honda NC750) and how his generation are just built of girders of hardened steel! He was an encyclopaedia of knowledge. I came across a proverb which I’m sure most have heard before and I quote.
“When an old man dies, a library burns to the ground!”
Well, the saying hit home.
Mooching around the dealership I came across two of these “Warrior” tractors. I’ve never been into tractors but if I was this would definitely be it. It’s around the size of my house and unapologetically big 💪🏾
The old fella was kind enough to let me take a copy of ‘Agricultural Trader’. Harks back at the days of buying Autotrader every Friday only for the best stuff to be sold Saturday morning 😤
Ah, memories 🙃
