Right. I’m Knackered. End of the week. And I’m properly, bone deep knackered. So much so that I decided to take the day off today. A radical concept.
Okay, fine, I did do one local job for a company that’s cool with me and gets how it works. But that was it. A single, civilised drop. That doesn’t count.
The rest of the week was a proper mixed bag. Spent a lot of it taking in some amazing scenery from the driver’s seat. Breathtaking is an understatement. You get these flashes of it between junctions. Rolling hills one minute, stark moors the next. Makes you remember there’s a country out there, not just tarmac and tailgates.
But it wasn’t all pretty views. The rest was arranging meetings with legal folk. Always a cheerful way to spend an afternoon. And generally doing admin work wherever I could pinch five minutes. In lay-bys, in car parks, on the tailgate in the rain. The glamour never stops.
Did have a good moment, though. Met a couple of other couriers at a services. Proper veterans. We had a brew and swapped war stories. Got me thinking. I’ve got some ideas for articles related to our industry, stuff beyond the usual ‘delivery tips’. I’ll be touching upon both physical health and mental health. Let’s be honest, sitting in a vibrating metal box for ten hours, eating service station food, and dealing with traffic that would try a saint. It takes its toll. I’ve been scribbling notes whilst driving, but I’ll need the input of real professionals in the respective fields to tidy up and round the edges. Make it proper useful, not just me moaning.
Speaking of traffic, the levels on the roads have been horrendous all week. Solid. Everywhere. Like everyone decided to have their breakdown or their indecisive moment directly in front of me. Thankfully, you learn patterns. I’ve realised when to be moving and where to make progress. Sometimes the ‘scenic route’ is the only route that’s moving. Other times, you just have to sit there and accept your fate with the radio on.
So that’s it. The week is done. I’ve delivered, I’ve planned, I’ve sat in traffic, and I’ve talked shop. Now, I’m switching off.
Have a lovely weekend, folks. I’m hitting bed with a movie that requires absolutely no thought whatsoever. A perfect delivery to the land of nod.
