“Competition doesn’t need to be toxic. There’s enough cake for all!”

There’s a network with an app. Many logistics types are part of. It’s a cool network. Loads are advertised, folk quote on them and over a number of metrics and pure luck the load will be allocated to somebody.

So, I was threading through the #Cotswolds sulking about something or another.

My phone rang through my fancy Android Auto thing. It was a number I’ve never come across before. Maybe I’ve won a new Xbox or a Tesla. Possibly a tax refund. Maybe it’s baddies!

Oooo exciting!!!

It was another driver. He saw me tracking close by via my gps signal. He’s broken down and needs a jump start. Asking if I could stop.

I didn’t want to stop at all. I couldn’t be bothered. Today was NOT a help a stranger day. I was still sulking and the reality set in that I haven’t won an Xbox or got a tax refund nor is it baddies. Which means I’m sulking more.

That’s when he said.

“I’ll give you £40.”

He sounded ready to cry.

Considering I had 50 minutes to spare a quick detour to help the guy won’t really put me behind.

I got to him, gave him a jump start so he can crack on with his day. He wanted to pay me for helping him. I told him to give the money to charity or use it on a new battery. Then I lectured him about taking responsibility of his vehicle, breakdown membership, preventative maintenance, etc.

It wasn’t a little lecture either. It was a full on take responsibility, you failed this time, outcome could have been worse, think of the kids, fix up type lecture.

He wasn’t new in the courier game. He just done things differently.

It was easy to scoff and look down my nose at him. But I didn’t. Why? Because that’s what sh!t people do and sometimes folk just need a good talking to. Open their mind to methods and ideas which aren’t obvious and are new to them.

Sure, he’s my competition but you know what. Competition doesn’t need to be toxic. There’s enough cake for all!
