Driver Jatt

A720 – Uff what a view!

Left Birmingham at breakfast to head in the direction of a lovely place in Scotland called Edinburgh. A long haul, but the kind of run that reminds you why the job beats sitting in an office.

Obviously, with anything, there are multiple routes you can take. My ‘sensible’ route is up the M6, onto the A/M74, then cutting across the A720. Why this route? Because it’s generally free-flowing once you’re past the Manchester region, and the views along the A720 are nothing less than spectacular. I was looking forward to this drive all week. I was trolling my wife about the fish n chips up here and how it was a shame she was going to miss out. However, being the gentleman I am, I did get her some local biscuits and cakes, so I’m still in the good books. Sadly, on the way back, not a single chip shop along the A720 was open. This was at about 3pm on a weekday afternoon. Meh. The dream of vinegar-soaked paper remains just that.

A Feast for the Eyes (If Not the Stomach)

Anyway, the best views along the A720 have nowhere to stop, and as I’m alone, I can’t take pics while driving. Obvs. Nevertheless, your eyes on this particular road go on their own journey. They leave your vehicle, darting across the vast green plains to greet the rugged, rocky terrain in the distance. Hills? Mountains? Or are they called glens? All I know is they are a full five-course meal for the eyes. Speaking of the eyes, they’ll continue the journey with you, only occasionally breaking from the awe to glance at the stone outbuildings, the herds of cute, fluffy sheep, and the other little gems you’ll no doubt spot on the way. It’s motorway driving, but it feels anything but ordinary.

A Stop in Carlops

I had to pull over eventually, and I stopped at a little village called Carlops. The terraced bungalows, all stone and slate, were just asking for a snap. I coupled that with a photo of the ‘shed library’ the locals use to swap and share books. It’s that kind of thoughtful, community touch you don’t see on the A34. I can confidently state that although I didn’t get my fish n chips, it was an overall brilliant day out. The quiet of the village after the hum of the road was perfect.

The Courier’s Point of View

This is the part other drivers might not write about: the professional satisfaction. This wasn’t a joyride. It was a Birmingham to Edinburgh delivery. A client needed something important taken north, and I was the one who could do it. Knowing the best route isn’t just about the satnav; it’s about understanding which road gives you the reliability and the morale boost for a ten-hour round trip. It’s about knowing you can handle the distance, the timing, and still have the focus to appreciate the view out the window—and be ready for the next job the moment you’re back.

That’s the difference. Anyone can drive a van. A proper courier manages the journey, for the parcel and for themselves. And there is more week left. 🙂
