Driver Jatt

Losing it…. literally!

I decided to take a day or so off work to do some maintenance on my van and some admin. As soon as I stepped out the house I felt the cold and decided to take it to a garage instead whilst I explore some local coffee shops and catch up with admin there.

All went well, I got my coffee and ticked off a few tasks. The garage done the maintenance so I hit the road.

Then things went downhill.

Some guy decided to drive straight into the back of another car driven by couple of old ladies. Then there was a big hoo haa as the guy who crashed fell into a state of remorse.

Next there was a case of people coming to a stop on sliproads or joining carriageways at crawling pace causing alarming levels of danger of which they are unaware. More of that in another post.

But the real fun being 👉 I’m driving on a very busy, fast and dark dual carriageway. All of a sudden I hear a scraping noise coming from the rear of the van! I hit my hazard lights and pulled into a lay-by.

So did the car behind me. This car had a battered wheel and two ripped tyres on the passenger side.

So what happened?

The garage didn’t fit my spare wheel back correctly. It fell off the rear of the van and landed on a live carriageway!

The car behind me was on a call at the time and drove straight over it. Hence the damage and popping of tyres.

The situation that’s unfolding was horrifying!

I stuck a hi-viz jacket on, armed with a torch I ran back up the side of the carriageway frantically trying to find the missing spare wheel. If it is still in the carriageway it could be the cause of a great accident and if an unsuspecting motorcyclist makes contact with it then it could mean a fatality.

I must have ran at least a mile and jogged another. I didn’t even know I could run or jog that far. PS, shout out to all the lorry drivers who moved to the side of their lane for me. It’s why I love them guys.

I couldn’t find it!

It definitely wasn’t in the carriageway. Could it have bounced onto the other side? My mind is making up scenarios. I gave up trying to find it myself and headed back to my van to call the emergency services and let them know there’s a missing wheel somewhere. I finally found it. It was on the verge looking rather mangled. About a mile from where my van was.

I got back to my van and the police turned up shortly afterwards. Their main concern was the whereabout of my spare wheel. Once I assured them I’ve located it they were cool.

End result, my insurance premiums are going to go up for the next five years and i’m having some interesting conversations about liability with the garage in question.

On the bright side, nobody injured and no accidents due to this.

Glad the week is over.
